New Umpires

What to Expect

Below are the key notes from the information that will be sent to new umpires at the start of each year:

As new umpires you will be umpiring the non-competitive age group.
The club run an Umpire Mentoring program. At the beginning and throughout the season, experienced umpires will join you at games to provide mentoring and answer your umpiring questions.
New umpires are strongly encouraged to take part in the club's Nippers Carnival. This is an opportunity to umpire matches before the season starts. Mentors will support umpires at the carnival.
Umpires are paid for each game they umpire. Payments are made at set points throughout the season.
You will receive a copy of the Phoenix Umpiring Logbook which is designed to support your umpiring development.
Rosters are issued at the start of each week with the details of the game you will be umpiring that week

Requirements for New Umpires

Before you can commence umpiring, you must:

Turn at least 13 years old during the year you start umpiring.

Register at Netball Learning and then complete and pass the online Rules of Netball Theory Exam. Once successfully completed, please email a copy of your certificate to: umpiring@phoenixnetball.org.au. The test costs $12.50 and will be reimbursed once you have filled out the appropriate paper work.

It is highly recommended that prior to commencing this exam you read a copy of the Rules of Netball (2020). The Rules of Netball is also available for purchase on the Netball Australia online shop.

Attend both the Non-Competitive Workshop and Beginner Umpire Course, both held at Downey Park. Details and registration are through Downey Park's Umpiring Courses & Important Dates Page. Any course costs will be covered by the club.

Complete a Statement of Supplier form and email a copy to umpiring@phoenixnetball.org.au.

For umpires who will be 18 years or older at the start of the season will need to obtain a Blue Card.

You cannot umpire until all the above are completed.
